Understanding Energy

How can the UK deliver low carbon energy affordably, securely and sustainably? How can it meet growing energy needs while cutting greenhouse gases by 80% by 2050? What new energy sources should replace power stations that are due to close? To meet complex challenges like these, the UK has launched a multi-billion pound investment programme that will transform the country’s energy infrastructure. Not only will it promote energy efficiency and harness a diverse mix of energy sources including cleaner fossil fuels, nuclear and renewables; it will also create new overhead power lines and substations to deliver energy where it’s needed.

Not surprisingly, there's hardly been a more exciting time to join the energy industry. National Grid are an international electricity and gas company based in the UK and north-eastern US, and this puts us at the heart of all the changes. Whatever your role, you'll help us hit stretching targets and achieve our far-reaching goal: secure, clean energy that supports our world far into the future.

How we're structured

The huge scale of our operations and the complexity of our networks are matched by our ambitious plans for the future. With 12,000 employees in the UK, we’re right at the heart of the energy industry. So whichever part of our business you join, you’ll help us ensure we can supply secure, clean energy for generations to come.

We have three main areas of operation, each made up of a myriad of technical and commercial teams. And supporting us all are our corporate and business functions, from Finance to Communications and everything in between.

Electricity Transmission

Electricity Transmission

We own and operate the electricity transmission network in England and Wales. We also operate (but don't own) the two high voltage electricity transmission networks in Scotland and have responsibility for the offshore electricity transmission regime. Our transmission systems are made up of approximately 7,200km of overhead lines, approximately 1,400km of underground cable and 335 substations. These all serve to connect sources of electricity generation to the distribution system. Our day-to-day operation of the network ensures that demand is fulfilled, meaning we transmit a safe, secure and dependable supply of energy across the country.

Gas Transmission

Gas Transmission

We are the sole owner and operator of gas transmission infrastructure in Great Britain. Our systems are made up of approximately 7,660km of high pressure pipes, 23 compressor stations, 7 coastal terminals and storage facilities that connect production to the distribution systems. It’s our task to see that supply meets demand, by buying, selling and using stored gas. At all times satisfactory system pressures need to be maintained and the highest quality standards upheld so that the system is operating within stringent safety limits day in, day out.

Gas Distribution

Gas Distribution

In the UK, gas leaves the transmission system and enters the distribution networks at high pressure. It is then transported through a number of reducing pressure tiers until it is finally delivered to consumers. There are eight regional distribution networks, four of which we own. Our UK distribution networks use over 130,000km of pipeline to deliver gas to around 10.9 million customers. We also manage the gas emergency number for all the gas distribution networks and other UK transporters.
